Great to see a mention for James Eller. Know him for his work with the mighty The The and the Archdrude Julian Cope but didn't realise he was part of that early scene. Looking forward to reading your future piece on Deaf School.
Amazingly evocative, Penny, and from my perspective in the States (Texas, specifically), yet, and in the day (not in retrospect)! Deaf School: Warner Bros. tried to break them here, but radio would have none of it! I had the promo of, at least, the debut album. I don't recall being really attracted to them at all.
The Yachts was a different story....while I'll need to look up the jacket to be reminded, I recall their name fondly, so I think I favored their album a little more! Great piece......Elvis on a boat! I'd-a bought passage!
I look forward! A definite lack of info, back in the day, may have been a hindrance, too. Without having broken in the states, rock mags had little motivation to write about them (and I read all the rags of the day)! I'll look for your DS piece, Penny!

Oh, that's interesting - I didn't recognise the name when I re-read the piece.

I'm planning on running a Deaf School piece in a few weeks, Brad. Maybe it'll change your mind.

Costello was indeed a surprise. I thought the DJ was playing 'I don't want to go to Chelsea' then I went below deck to find it was Elvis live.
Possibly the best comment ever on a band: "I like the Yachts, but I like them three minutes at a time. More than hour is more than enough" :)
A bit unfair really, but I was young.
